Suspect a leak?

Here are a few things to check:

  • A toilet may not be shutting off after flushing, the tank level may be too high, or the stopper has warped allowing water to seep into the bowl.  You can check the toilet for leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring in the tank at night.  If the color is in the bowl in the morning, something is wrong.
  • Check to see how often your water softener is kicking in.  Summer storms sometime throw off the timer.
  • Check outside faucets.  During the summer it is easy to leave a hose running and not realize it.
  • The best way to check for a leak is to read the meter, especially if you are going to be gone for a few days.  Just read it before you go and then when you return.  It should be the same reading.
